This is one of those books--and there aren't many--that I feel obliged to put into people's hands, saying, "Trust me--this is GREAT storytelling." Vandehaeghe's bag of writerly skills boggles the mind. To start with, no one writes dialogue this well--from MULTIPLE points of view encompassing multiple nationalities, cultures, genders and social levels. Then there's his power to evoke setting--and we're talking settings that have long since disappeared, like the American and Canadian frontiers. It's not like he just walked out his front door to take a look around and then wrote down what he saw. His research into periods, locales and cultures is just so well rendered that you feel certain this is how it really was--or if not, it should have been because it makes perfect sense. This is the sort of book you turn off the phone for and just settle in, because once you get rolling, you're just not going to be able to resist turning just a few more pages to see--well, not so much what happens next, because there is a certain kind of cosmic justice that you know is going to be meted out, but rather, how these folks are getting on. The characters, even the unlikeable ones--and there are some doozies--are just so damn interesting that they leap off the page and demand that you take an interest in them. And while I may have found the ending a little predictable, in part, I was just fine with that because the trip was so enjoyable and because the cosmos does, after all, occasionally turn out the way it's supposed to.

A vivid picture of the post-civil war Western frontier, with all its beauty and brutality. Well-developed characters, and just enough plot twists to make it a page turner, too. I'd definitely recommend it, and I plan to read more by this author.
Struggled to read this book. It jumped around a great deal, from character to character and story-line to story-line. Sometimes I couldn't tell what country or territory or time period where the action (or lack there of) was taking place. Lots of characters yet not a great deal of character development. Would not recommend.
This novel is brilliantly conceived, paced and articulated. Guy Vanderhaeghe has a mastery of the English language that apparently defeats dim attention spans (witness, the few heretofore one- and two-star reviews, no doubt offered by twenty-something dilettantes with more axes to grind than marbles to rattle together - better stick to video games, twits! At very least, you'll enjoy the illusion of eye-hand co-ordination, favored fall-back of the adrift). Some mothers do have 'em!
A vivid account of life in the 1800's in Montana and Canadian Forts and Indian tribal villages. The story is of two English brothers who seek their missing brother's whereabouts last known to be in Montana. Although the brothers are from notability, each has his own separative personality and take on their duty to track down their missing brother. Thus, the story is a winding journey.
O found this story to be engaging and easy to get caught up in. Good characters and a story line that just carried me along. I recommend it.
a top score. The author writes a 19th century novel the way it might have been written 150 years ago. In terms of scope, I think this novel closely resembles A.B. Guthrie's, The Big Sky, more than anything else. It takes time to tackle these Post Modern pieces and it takes a while to care about anyone in here but gradually the reader begins to understand the relationships. A lot of stuff goes unsaid which I think speaks well for any writer. We know that Aloysius is a devoted friend to Custis and we figure it out without being clubbed with it. The relationship between Jerry Potts and Custis also figures in this vein. I would like to have read more of Potts' story. My only criticism and it is mild is that Charles narrates a bit too long.
If you want to read something ultimately satisfying in non traditional ways, this might be your ticket.
I am giving this 5 stars because it is one of the best books I have ever read. Filled with great characters and interesting plot twists, it is written in beautiful prose. I love the dictionary on my for the ease with which I could take notes and look up words that were not in my vocabulary.

HOWEVER, this is the second book I have purchased that has major, distracting formatting issues. I pay a premium price, and I think whoever is doing the formatting owes us users a better product. There were odd spaces, words above and below the baseline, and sometimes fuzzy or ill defined text. I have had issues before with other books. Someone is asleep on quality control, and it disappoints me.
