This is a review of the audio book only.
I'm a huge fan of Åsa Larsson and I really enjoyed this book when I read it in print. The story is captivating and the translation is perfect. However, the audio version is terrible. The narrator sounds like she came out of a bar in a Raymond Chandler novel. Her inflection is all wrong ,and instead of the sometimes crisp, sometimes reflective narration required by this story, she drawls through it in a monotone.
In my opinion the choice of narrator was a serious error on the part of the publisher. The translation from Swedish is into British English (the title gives it away: "Spilt" in American English?), and to hear an American drawling "Pack it in!" Or "What the bloody hell are you doing?" borders on the absurd. But even that would be excusable if the narrator showed some sensitivity to the text.
If you can, avoid this and read the text instead.

The Blood Spilt Asa Larsson 9780385339827 Books Reviews

Rebecka Martinssen, our erstwhile high-functioning tax attorney struggles with the after-effects of severe emotional traumas from her experiences in her hometown in Kiruna Municipality. Trauma in plural, because her experiences as a young adult have lain dormant, although she managed to get away from Kiruna and build a life for herself. When she returned, confrontation with her perpetrator, and a disturbed killer have re-traumatized her, and added trauma to trauma. At work, she is struggling to be able to focus and function, something that is evident to those with whom she works. Rebecka's Stockholm employer, Måns Wenngren, does not seem to be put off by her fragility. The reason for this is revealed in this story.
When Rebecka returns to her hometown area, she discovers that the group of priests (Church of Sweden?) that the law firm is courting has experienced a tragedy...a female priest, Mildred Nilsson, was brutally murdered. Mildred was a very controversial figure in the parish, and seemed to inspire aggression in some men, and passive-aggression in the other priests. She also inspired the women by helping them to create and carry out a strong social support system.
At this point, I will simply say that this is a multi-layered story which a reader can enjoy for themselves. Inspector Anna-Maria Mella and Sven-Erik Stålnacke return in full form. Suffice it to say, when she faces a life-threatening and seemingly inescapable, terrifying, situation, Rebecka's already fragile internal boundaries collapse totally. She would be less than human for this not to happen, given all that she has been through. This is sad, and frightening, and you will hope for the best for Rebecka. I found myself wondering...in the next book...how will she fare with all of this pain?
You really should read this series in order. That said, Spoiler alert At the end of the series debut, Sun Storm, attorney Rebecka Martinsson killed three men to protect herself and two young girls. As this novel opens, Martinsson has gone back to work after a lengthy convalescence following those traumatic events. Of course no one treats her the same, and she hates being the subject of gossip and conjecture. She is supported by others to confront her ghosts, to go back to northern Sweden. There is company business she can help with, and it will do her good. She finds some surprising peace there and decides to stay on a few days. She gets to know another intriguing cast of characters ex-policeman and local power broker Lars-Gunnar and his simple son Nalle, the local friendly waitress and her tattooed boss and dog-loving ditzy mother Lisa. But of course no one is quite who they seem to be, and when a local woman priest is murdered, Rebecka becomes involved, renewing her acquaintance with police detectives Anna-Maria Mella, who has now had her fourth child, and dear Sven-Erik, distraught over a missing cat.

I love that our heroine mainly contributes to the murder investigation through mental acuity and document research -- heady stuff for a librarian. I also greatly admire the writing of Asa Larsson as she travels between characters, alternating voice and technique in a narrative patchwork that comes together as the story unfolds. Interspersed with the human story is that of a wolf in the area, and Larsson shows fine writing from that perspective as well. As a matter of fact, there is a strong group of threads involving dogs, as Rebecka remembers past pets, happy canines romp through the snow at her grandmother's house, and several humans are even referred to as puppies and terriers. And there is a chapter where Lisa describes each of her dogs that is just wonderful. Anna-Maria's family woman angst and Sven-Erik's despair round out the series trio's experiences as they try to work out the perpetrator and Rebecka tries to recover from the events of Sun Storm. There is also an appearance by delightfully cranky coroner Lars Pohjanen.

This book is intense and brutal, a fitting sequel to Sun Storm. If it seems female-centric to some, I'd say that's inaccurate. There are plenty of interesting male characters, equally complex and nuanced, and Sven-Erik is terrific.

Second in a terrific series. Read them in order! They are Sun Storm (also published as The Savage Altar),The Blood Spilt, The Black Path, Until Thy Wrath Be Past, and The Second Deadly Sin.

Highest recommendation.
I agree with other reviewers who place Asa Larsson's writing in the same category as Henning Mankell and other great Scandinavian crime fiction writers. Larsson is good at defining characters in the story, giving them enough personality so that the reader can understand their world and therefore care enough when something does or doesn't happen to them.
In this 2nd story, Rebecka is thrown in the midst of a major village drama surrounding the murder of a female priest. She stayed behind after completing an assignment because it took place in Kiruna, the area where she grew up. Looking for personal redemption, she becomes involved in the village with some expected (and unexpected) consequences.
There are several parallel stories about villagers that are well worth reading on on their own. And then there is the Yellow Legs - an amazing thread running through the entire story.
