First, let me start by saying Charlaine Harris is one of my favorite authors. I believe I have read most of her work and love her writing style and her characterization. That being said, Sweet and Deadly wasn't one of my personal choices of her work. It is hard to say why because it was well written and the character build up was there. I guess I just didn't connect with the main character. However, it was worth the read. If this will be your first Charlaine Harris novel, I would recommend a different story.

Sweet and Deadly was a really good mystery. . The mystery was solved in a logical manner--a thing I look for in a good mystery. The characters interesting and well done. They were easy to keep separate as I read. I was very happy with this book.
Right from the start, Charlaine Harris has had characters that act like real people. They are complicated, and relationships are imperfect. Those are some of the things I have always loved about her books. I really enjoyed reading her debut, and it would have hooked me if I had read it when it first came out.

Senseless killings, stupid actions and people. Unlike her other older publications, this one does not have any spark.

I doubt I will re-read this story. I am always interested in works by this author.
Entertaining light read. Copyright 1981. The story was a trip to the past. Dated material - typewriters in the news rooms, rotary phones, no cell phones, setting the newspaper to print by hand... Even the smallest newspaper must be digital/computerized by now. (The function buttons on my original weird ME out; I keep attempting touch screen.) The story needs an update for a fresh read, might draw a new audience. Please, Ms. Harris write more stories of Harper Connelly.
This is Harris' first published novel and it shows. The mystery and character development are weak - lacking the the experience and clever plotting found in her later mystery series. And in those series, readers become invested in the spunky heroines like Sookie and Lily Bard. It's harder to connect with Catherine in this story, especially since this is a stand alone novel. However, even here Harris' potential shows. This is a fast and easy cozy mystery. Serious mystery fans will be unimpressed, but the author's fans will probably enjoy this.

This new hardcover edition from Severn House is very nice, but also seriously overpriced at a retail of $28.95. The font is larger than standard, more like what you find in YA hardcover editions, and it has pictorial boards covered by a dust jacket with the same image. Collectors of Harris' work (like me) will want this hard to find novel, but casual readers would be better off buying the reissued mass market edition - Sweet and Deadly.
I was already a fan of Charlaine Harris before reading this mystery. This book gave me a whole new reason to love her work. She excels at giving you a great insight into the main character. She is so descriptive that you can see the scene in your mind. This was an enjoyable mystery that had me rooting for the heroine from beginning to end. Kudos to Ms. Harris for an entertaining read! No fan of hers will be disappointed, and this should gain her fans that don't care for the supernatural genre. I highly recommend it!
