I think that this generation today, seems to live at home for far longer than in years gone by. I totally appreciated how Liam and Dee end up with all of their adult kids living at home. Liam unexpectedly loses his job and because none of the kids contribute, Dee realises she's in danger of becoming bitter. She starts to make changes and it's a great read discovering how everyone feels and acts. It was also good to catch up a little with the crowd on St Jarlath's Crescent. Highly recommended.Tags : Full House (Quick Reads) [Maeve Binchy] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A fantastic Maeve Binchy - written specially for the World Book Day Quick Reads promotion.

Dee loves her children very much,Maeve Binchy,Full House (Quick Reads),Orion,1409136612

Strangely I met this author in crossword puzzles. Then my sister said she liked her. I bought a few of her books but never read them. So this short story is my first. I liked it but found the sudden overnight change in the parents a bit unlikely. The mother was right she should have demanded things of her children. It also seemed strange that the children had never known how most people lived. I'll try another...
This was a Maeve Binchy that I had somehow missed so I was thrilled to find it. As usual she writes with humor and total understanding of real people..I always anxiously awaited each new book and felt so very sad at her passing. If you have not read any Binchy...I strongly suggest that you start with her first and read through her whole repetoire Betcha can't read just one. I have them all and am now rereading them.
What to say about Maeve Binchey?? I wish she would write a dozen books a year. I have read all of her books & every one of them was a lovely experience. I don't read "romance" books or many "girly" books, but I could read one a week by her & still wish for more. I have passed them along to many friends that I exchange books with & they were very skeptical because of the type of books. They all loved them too.
Although this isn't a romance, the story is great and it just might be a wake-up call for parents who have grown children still living at home. Dee and Liam Nolan never expected their children to come back home after they left and certainly not to ever leave. When the business her husband works for shuts down because of the economy. They are looking at possibly going bankrupt especially since none of their children contribute to the household.
This story is more about Dee and Liam learning a lesson and taking a stand, than the kids starting to be more responsible. I liked it and hope it inspires some parents who may not have realized that they aren't doing their loved ones any favors to let them live and home without paying rent.
Dear Ms. Binchy,
How I miss your words. Your way of writing that captured the very essence of family life with all its imperfections and blessings has always touched my heart and I often find myself thinking back to your best works, remembering the characters whose lives touched mine. This last unread book, so very small, has been sitting on my bedside table, tempting me since your death to pick it up and read it. I've waited for a while, though, wanting to put off this last moment of savoring your wisdom for the first time. Today was the perfect day to finally open its cover and jump in. In this short story, you gave a wonderful look into the heart of a mother who must learn, after years of coddling, to give her children a dose of tough love. The effect on her family - and her marriage - is dramatic and touching, as your writing always is. I only wish it had been longer, for I read it in an hour and was so sad to put it down. I will always miss your magical pen, Maeve, but I'm thankful for the way you blessed my life with it.
A Grateful Reader
I read this book while waiting for an appointment and it hit the spot. I do not like waiting and Full House made the waiting much more pleasant. I always like Maeve Benchley's books and stories. This one was no exception. I could really relate to the mother in the story, Dee. She catered to her entire family for years and years and they took her for granted until she quit. Good for her. I think it finally made her adult children grow up and appreciate what their family had done for them. I enjoy reading about life in Ireland and especially the food that they cook. I guess I am a foodie. Happy endings are important to me also and this little book did have a very happy ending. It taught a lesson if the reader wants to learn the lesson. I think there are a lot of grown children out there who live at home and need to read this book. I am thinking of several that I might refer them to this book. Five stars for this book for sure.
I really loved this book. Then again I do like anything written by Mauve Binchy -) It was only a short book but like all of her books very easy to read and to get involved in. The story line is so believable and you feel as though you at right there involved in the doings of this family. Another great read by Mauve. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves her stories and who really can relate to the characters.
