From my blogI couldn't stop reading this, I wanted to call in to work and say I had more important things to do, which was finishing this book. The story completely captured my attention. This is the perfect book for an advocate group on sexual abuse to read and discuss with each other. What I loved the best that Steena Holmes did was not make it emotionally driven to the point where you have to warn readers about possible triggers to sexual abuse as their were no descriptions. This wasn't about the act but more about what do you do with suspicions or when a young child repeats something and your unsure.
Alyson was my favourite character, she had a traumatic experience when she was young which makes her overprotective with her daughter Lyla. The unfortunate part is her family treat her with kid gloves and thinks that she exaggerates everything. Alyson has a great trusting relationship with her sister Tricia and so when Tricia has a huge sleepover with all the dance girls she says yes. Her son is allowed a friend also, so here starts the preteen drama, boys and girls in the house together, hmmmm.
The night goes well but when Lyla is telling her mom about it, she innocently says Keera, Alyson's sisters best friend daughter makes this statement. "She said she wanted to know if a boy's kisses are different than a man's."
Alyson's world stops, is history repeating itself. She is happy her daughter told and it wasn't her daughter involved but she goes into advocate mode. This is where the story is edge of your seat worthy until the end. We then see how adults deal with a suspicion of sexual abuse to a child. This would make for some great discussion. Secrets, lies, debates, anger, betrayal, all sorts of emotions start.
I also enjoyed that the grandparents were in the story. We were able to see how another generation dealt with accusations of sexual abuse, bringing family together but also keeping mouths shut. A huge question would be how do you protect the child, the parents, the abuser if they are innocent? It can wreck everyone's world but what if the accusations are true? Alyson is angry that everyone is not making critical fast decisions which trigger her past more.
Tricia is having coffee with her friend which is also the principle and makes a statement without thought. In my opinion she knew exactly what she was doing and I was proud that the principle went into risk of abuse mode.
This story is an important one for young adults to understand when secrets should be revealed, how adults should deal with possible abuse, generational decisions and how they affect adults and when adults need to be honest with children. Again, I didn't think the author underplayed the circumstances but made it readable for all, such an important topic can be to hard to read about but was perfectly executed in my opinion, it was powerful.
A great portray of friendships, marriage, culture pride, cousin connections, sibling relationships and a little bit of dance mom drama. A perfect character driven book, a loved the execution of this story which was told by the 3 adult, Alyson, Tricia and Myah, the mom of Keera.

Alyson trusts no one with her daughter not her parents, not her sister, not other families from school. She doesn't even leave her daughter alone at dance lessons or other after-school activities that are supervised by adults. When she steps out of her controlling comfort zone JUST ONCE and lets her daughter attend a sleepover, a traumatic event leaves her feeling even more anxious as she struggles to decide whether to speak out, knowing someone's life will be torn apart.
Great suspense and some unexpected twists and turns that take the novel to a place the reader doesn't expect.
The Word Game is an amazing read. Yes, it is a tough yopic, and one that shouldn't be taken lightly. Ms. Holmes did an extraordinary job in writing this book. Most people, want to turn a blind eye to things going on around them, but Alyson made sure a little girl's voice was heard! I truly enjoyed the characters, well developed, some of them, I wanted to throttle! But, the author was able to make me change my mind an out some of thrm. She made me realize, the actions of others, are not always what they seem!
This is such a hard topic to stomach; however, this author does such a fantastic job of writing and handling this topic. The characters are so well developed and the relationships they share will leave you longing. I love Ida, such an old fashioned mother. Lyla and her mother share a special relationship, you wonder if she has been "helicoptered" and why. Tricia's past will hurt your heart. Myah and Keera, mother and daughter, hurt beyond hurt.
A hard topic to read about, but a topic that is handled so well by this author. I found myself putting myself in each of their shoes. What would you do if?...
The subject of molestation is such a horrible issue! Ms Holmes deals with it with such sensitivity. "Helicopter" mom is what they now call it. Alyson sends her daughter on a sleep over chaperoned by her adult sister. What her daughter reveals after coming home could destroy her whole family and beyond. Steena's stories always deal with terrible events but leave you feeling like there is hope at the end of dark tunnels.
I love the story, it won't let you go, you have to keep reading. What does annoy me very much is that the writer is using German and in my opinion used an online translating machine to get the German for the book. It's so wrong in many places that it's becoming kind of annoying to read the German sentences. The story as I said is amazing, it's well written and pulls you into the story. But if you want to use another language in your book, please go to a native speaker. You don't say Sie to a child, not in plural either. just small things, but to a semi native speaker it's bugging.
Otherwise, do buy this book because the story is awesome!
This book had a good idea for a story. However, it wasn't written as well as it could have been. There is a lot of filler and, although the author tried to create some twists, it was very predictable and fell flat. I personally would not recommend this book, but if you just want something stupidly fast, simple, and boring to read then feel free to read it.
It does make you think about abuse, but it could have been written so much better.
I really struggled with the first quarter of this book and almost stopped reading. The characters weren't very well developed and they seemed quite simplistic and unrealistic. The conversations were just too wooden and unnatural.
The book did improve as the story went along, though and I finished the 2nd half in a day. Unfortunately the characters never ended up being complex enough for me to be able to relate to any of them.
In the end it was worth the money I paid but it's a fairly lightweight book and not one I would recommend to anyone I know.
