I so wanted to love this book!!
It is an ominous sign, when Hero meets Heroine in the very beginning of a novel. It tells me either the author has no patience and is going to rush through the story, or assumes the reader has no patience (with the smae end result). Ironically, it makes me lose my patience.

However, this book received such recommendations that I was willing to look past that and prepared myself for a true historical romance gem.
It truly pains me to give such a low rating, but it reflects my taste and expectations from a romance novell.

I am so tired of characters glaring at each other, giving each other the evil eye , charachters behaving not according to their time and status (you can be bold and dangerous withous sexually harrasing a girl of nobility) or age.
Tired of historical impossibilities, such as an exiler returning to Scotland pretending to be british so that the Black Guard wouldn't hassle him is a good idea.

The characters are flat and detached, I could care less about either of them.
the plot was awkward though the book relates to the 45 Jacobites uprising, it could have easily related to another time and another place.

Made it till 40%.

The Pride of Lions Marsha Canham 9780440224570 Books Reviews

So many of the authors I've followed over the years have died and I've been searching for new ones who stir the soul and bring characters to life the way that James Michener, Robert B Parker and Elmore Leonard have done. There are many others that I read and still do. Now I have added new authors to my list and one of the latest is Marsha Canham.

After reading Game of Thrones, the whole series, and the Outlander series back to back I've found that the history of Scotland attracts me more and more. I was never a history buff in my earlier years but now that has changed drastically. I've set aside the mystery novels and family sagas for a while and turned to period pieces to learn more of that time and place. That's how I chose The Pride of Lions, a Scotland Trilogy by Marsha Canham. She tells the story of the people, the place and the time in such vivid detail that you feel you actually know them. After reading The Pride of Lions which was the first book in the trilogy I immediately ordered The Blood of Roses, Book 2 and Midnight Honor, Book 3. There are some books that you wish would never end. Each book drew me deeper into the story in such a way that it was hard to put them down.

Thank Goodness for my PaperWhite that has made reading such a pleasure for me again. EBooks have made it possible for me to have the books I love at my fingertips and the settings on the allow me to change font sizes and lighting to reduce eyestrain. At 85 I'm beginning to feel like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. So much to do, so little time but the beauty of it is the enjoyment you have doing it.
This is a hard one for me to review as I almost put it down within the first third of the book due to boredom. It starts slowly and goes on rather benignly, and then "bang" it's too good to put down. And then by the end you have just got to get book II of this series to find out what will happen.
I spent the first third of this book despising Catherine as the spoiled debutante she is. The author does a good job of hiding the slow budding romance. I actually wasn't certain there would be anything other than dislike between the H and h. Catherine is a petulant drama queen with an acid tongue and simplistic view of life. She is self- centered and bitchy. I wanted someone to put a gag on her mouth. As for Alex, he is a dreamboat and an enigma. I was actually very surprised at his attraction to Catherine.
I have to laud the author for her action scenes...they're done very well, very detailed. The secondary characters are well done, as well. It wasn't hard to finally become attached to the storyline, and the plot us rich in historical facts. The politics are explained very well from both sides. As are the customs and rich culture of the people of the era.
I highly recommend this book, and plan to read the whole series. I cannot wait to see what will happen next.
It is a great book. Can't wait to read Blood of Roses. For anyone wanting to read this book you must commit to read both books. This does not end all happy. It is happy to the point that they find they love each other, but that does not mean they will be together for now. SPOILER!!! With the war starting between the Scots and the English he sends her await to be safe. You can figure that out for yourself if you read the information for the Blood of Roses.

Catherine was extremely spoiled at first. She is the most sought after female of the ton. She has hers set on the most sought after male in the ton. However something happens and she is forced to marry Alex. Alex had never planned to marry again. The love of his life was raped and killed in front of him. Therefore he really hates the fact that he was forced to marry to the spoiled Catherine. They plan on getting an annulment but things prevent it.

This is one of those books that keep you reading. You may even cry a little at the end. Definitely a good book. I would not let her being spoiled keep you from reading it. She grows to be a better person and event though she occasionally still falls back to being a little spoiled.

Sexual content is medium.

A comment about Blood of Roses the sequel to this book. You should read the reviews before you comment yourself to reading both books. I am glad I read it, but there are a lot of battle stuff throughout the book. Some people may find it a little boring. However even those that mentioned it still rated it at least a 3, as parts of the story are really great. The last part of the book may make you cry for those who are lost before, during and after the battle.
